  • When? Sat, Jan 31 9pm - Sun, Feb 1, 9am
  • Where? House of the Future, 45th and Springfield Ave (take the 34 trolley to 45th St)

Go back to the future at the House of the Future with ACT UP as we commemorate the end of our 20th anniversary year with a fundraiser from back in the day. Get people to sponsor you for each hour you spend at the sleepathon (lump sum donations also acceptable). Don't forget your slippers!

All are welcome to join us for our weekly meeting. The Monday meeting is the primary decision-making body of ACT UP Philadelphia, and everyone there gets a say. We meet at 6pm every Monday night at the Church of St. Luke and the Epiphany, 330 S. 13th Street, Philadelphia. We build the agenda by doing a go-round. Everyone introduces themselves and adds items to the agenda. Agenda categories include:

  • Announcements (1 minute, no discussion)
  • Action
  • Discussion
  • Reportback
  • Proposals
  • Non ACT UP Items

At the beginning of the meeting, the facilitator will present our mission statement (ACT UP is the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power. We are a diverse, non-partisan group of individuals, united in anger and committed to ending the AIDS crisis through direct action). They will also ask if anyone in the room is from law enforcement, pharmaceutical companies or the media, and the group will decide if that person can stay.  Questions? Call or email at the contact info that runs along the bottom of our page.

Hundreds of angry AIDS activists deliver backbone to “spineless” McCain, Obama, Reid and McConnell, protesting inaction on landmark global AIDS bill

Thurs June 26, 2008 • Noon • Stanton Park (4th and C NE) • March to each Senate office bearing giant spines.

WASHINGTON, DC- Hundreds of activists, angry at Senate leadership and Presidential hopefuls due to a stalled global health bill, will descend on Capitol Hill to deliver a giant spine to Senators Reid, McConnell, Obama and McCain on June 26, 2006. Although there are more than 60 Senate supporters, a small number led by Sen. Coburn (R, OK) have placed a hold on the bill, proposing to flat-fund the program while earmarking the majority of funds for treatment. According to activists, the Senate leadership and the Presidential candidates are not taking the necessary action to pass the Hyde/Lantos U.S. Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008 (S. 2731). The bill commits $50 billion over five years to continue the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Join ACT UP and other activists from the mid-Atlantic on:

  • Thursday, June 26
  • 12 pm
  • Stanton Park (4th and C NE), Washington DC

We will be meeting to demand that Senate leadership stand up to Senator Coburn (R-OK), who is blocking passage of the largest global health bill in history. Coburn says he objects to the bill and has placed a “hold” on a vote, even though there are more than 60 bipartisan supporters in the Senate – but the Senate leaders of both parties are pretending to be helpless to call for a vote. If the bill doesn’t pass before the G8 in early July, the leaders of both parties are responsible. Senators Reid, McConnell, Obama and McCain need to make sure to PASS THE GLOBAL AIDS, TB AND MALARIA BILL BY JULY 1st! Free buses are available from Philadelphia and NYC. Philadelphia buses will depart from Broad and Walnut at 7:30am. NYC bus departure is still being determined. To RSVP for either bus, or if you have questions about the action, contact samsitrin500@hotmail.com.
