JOIN ACT UP and come kick butt with us!

In the past year, ACT UP Philadelphia has been stronger and more effective than ever. Demonstrations have been larger, and significant victories have been won. The membership of ACT UP Philadelphia is over half people of color and over half people living with HIV. The bridges built over the years to other organizations such as One Day at a Time, Project TEACH, and We The People have greatly enhanced ACT UP's ability to win real victories for people with HIV. As ACT UP Philadelphia turns 20 years old in 2008, the group continues to maintain its core characteristics:

  • ACT UP is still an all volunteer organization, run by its members and run by consensus. The group works on whatever issues the general body decides upon at its weekly Monday night meetings.
  • ACT UP remains committed to democratic pro-cess, self-education, and the empowerment of PWA's to take charge of their own lives and health.
  • ACT UP is still "united in anger and committed to direct action to ending the AIDS crisis."
  • More than ever before, ACT UP stands almost alone in its use of empowerment-based grassroots organizing, aggressive non-violent direct action tactics, and its analysis of the AIDS epidemic as a political crisis that can be solved.
  • ACT UP still accepts no drug company or government funding.
  • ACT UP exists solely as a political organization in a contest of power typically against drug companies and/or government agencies. The group does not allow compromises by accepting funding from its opponents.
  • ACT UP has no paid staff and operates out of a donated office. Funds are often raised on a per-project basis. Small grants from Bread and Roses and the Philadelphia Foundation enable the group to do its work.
  • ACT UP's typical yearly budget is between $12-$25,000, total.
  • No group tops ACT UP in the bang for the buck category.
