HIV/AIDS Treatment & Research Activism
TREATMENT ACCESS ACTIVISMGlobalInternational Groups and Campaigns Global Treatment Access Campaign Global Treatment Action Campaign (GTAC) is a global network for communication and organization towards access to essential medications for HIV and other diseases. Around the world, the campaigns vary. The core issues remain the same: exorbitant drug prices, crippling debt, and a lack of sustainable public health strategies to meet the needs of those most affected by the AIDS epidemic, including women, children and the poor. Global Treatment Action Campaign is committed to working on these issues by creating and supporting partnerships between first- and third-world activist groups, and providing action tools and updates on current campaigns around the world.  MSF Campaign For Access To Essential Medications As a medical humanitarian organization, it is fundamentally unacceptable to MSF that access to essential medicines is increasingly impossible, particularly for the most common global infectious diseases. Since 1999, MSF has been campaigning internationally to find long-term, sustainable solutions to this crisis. The Campaign is pushing to lower the prices of existing medicines, to bring abandoned drugs back into production, to stimulate research and development for diseases that primarily affect the poor, and to overcome other barriers to access.  Global AIDS Alliance (GAA) The Global AIDS Alliance (GAA) is an alliance of partner organizations, founded in March, 2001 and headquartered in Washington, DC. Sponsoring groups include religious organizations, humanitarian agencies, human rights groups, AIDS activists and others. The GAA stands for eliminating the AIDS crisis without delay by mobilizing public opinion, more money, and far better policies against HIV/AIDS and its causes, including extreme poverty.  StopGlobalAIDS.com The Campaign to Stop Global AIDS is about telling political leaders three
things:
- Donate the Dollars! - that means providing more money to fight the disease with prevention, care, treatment, and research and making sure funds are used effectively.
- Treat the People! - that means making sure there's reliable access to affordable medication for all those living with AIDS.
- Drop the Debt! - that means providing deeper, fairer debt cancellation for impoverished countries so they can tackle problems including AIDS, hunger, education and more.
 Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) The Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) is a US-based network of student and youth organizations committed to the global fight against AIDS. SGAC seeks to mobilize a multi-racial student movement, in partnership with students internationally, to make claims upon governments, corporations, and civil society through education, leadership training, informed advocacy and direct action. SGAC demands sufficient resources, effective prevention, and guaranteed access to AIDS treatment and care as a matter of moral urgency.  Health GAP HealthGAP campaigns for drug access and the resources necessary to sustain access for people with HIV/AIDS across the globe. They work with allies in the global South and in the
G-7 countries to formulate policies that promote access, mobilize grassroots support for those policies, and confront governmental policy makers, the pharmaceutical industry and international agencies when their policies or practices block access.  The Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+) The Global Network of People living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+) is a global network for and by people with HIV/AIDS. The mission of GNP+ is to work to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS. Country Groups Agua Buena Human Rights Association (Costa Rica) "We work to support the formation of strong advocacy groups run for and by People Living with HIV/AIDS throughout the Central American region. Our focus is on the need to confront human rights violations against people with AIDS and on the equally urgent need for PWA`s to receive potentially life saving medications in the region. We have visited various countries and published several articles regarding this theme."  Grupo Pela VIDDA (Brazil) Pela Vidda works on public policies concerning AIDS prevention and care through activism, public demonstrations and the participation on local and national policy making commissions and committees (State Commission on Aids and National Vaccines Committee). The Kenya Coalition on Access to Essential Medicines is a network of associations, people living with AIDS, pharmacists, doctors, lawyers, journalists and other individuals advocating for the improvement of access to essential medicines for all in Kenya. The coalition includes amongst others the following organizations: Action Aid, FIDA, The Association of People living with AIDS in Kenya (TAPWAK), Network for people living with HIV/AIDS (NEPHAK),Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya (WOFAK), Society for Women and AIDS in Kenya (SWAK), Health Action International (HAI Africa), Nyumbani, Innovative Lawyering, International Federation of Women Lawyers - Kenya (FIDA), Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF), DACASA, Pharmaciens sans Frontieres (PSF), Kenyan Medical Association (KMA).  Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), South Africa The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) was launched on 10 December 1998, International Human Rights Day. Its main objective is to campaign for greater access to treatment for all South Africans, by raising public awareness and understanding about issues surrounding the availability, affordability and use of HIV treatments. TAC campaigns against the view that AIDS is a "death sentence."  Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network The Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network is based in Montreal (Quebec), Canada. It is the only national, community-based, charitable organization in Canada working exclusively in the area of policy and legal issues raised by HIV/AIDS. It was formed in November 1992 and has over 200 members across Canada and internationally. The Legal Network is participating in the efforts to ensure access to AIDS treatments in the developing world.
