Thunderbird is a free email program much like Outlook. If you have trouble setting up Thunderbird contact the Critical Path Help Desk at support@critpath.org or 215-985-4448 x145 Option 2.
In Thunderbird (Icedove in Debian Linux), click on the File menu -> New -> Mail Account (see screenshot 1 below).
The first step in creating a Thunderbird account, is to provide your name and your Critical Path email address. Press “Continue” when you are done.
Next, you will want to immediately press “Manual Config”:
IMAP or POP?
Next, you’ll need to decide whether you want a POP account or an IMAP account. In most cases, we recommend POP, but if you plan to use webmail frequently or will use multiple computers to check your email, you may want to use IMAP.
POP settings are as follows:
Incoming: POP
Incoming server hostname: secure.critpath.org or mail.mayfirst.org
Incoming Port: 995
Incoming SSL: STARTTLS
Incoming Authentication: Normal Password
Outgoing: SMTP
Outgoing server hostname: mail.mayfirst.org
Outgoing Port: 587
Outgoing SSL: STARTTLS
Outgoing Authentication: Normal Password
IMAP settings are as follows:
Incoming: IMAP
Incoming server hostname: mail.mayfirst.org
Incoming Port: 143
Incoming SSL: STARTTLS
Incoming Authentication: Normal Password
Outgoing: SMTP
Outgoing server hostname: mail.mayfirst.org
Outgoing Port: 587
Outgoing SSL: STARTTLS
Outgoing Authentication: Normal Password
Once your settings are in place, press “Create Account”
You should also look over the other settings and adjust them to meet your needs. Access them from the Tools menu -> Account Settings.
The composition settings are optional. Mayfirst/People Link highly recommends turning off HTML email, which will ensure that your mail is legible to more readers. We often find that the default reply settings are not to our liking, and you may want to change these as well.
Lastly, if you are using IMAP, we strongly encourage you to enable offline caching, as explained on webchick.net. That will make it much faster to read your email.
