Update

September 24, 2008

Dear Critical Path Friends,

The message is to provide you with an update regarding the Critical Path Project.

Those of us at Philadelphia FIGHT and the Critical Path Project would like to thank the hundreds of people, users of our programs and allies in digital inclusion efforts that supported us throughout this difficult period; many of whom wrote letters, faxed the mayor, and made repeated phone calls to his office. Your testimonials were encouraging and kept us going when there were few options available.

Unfortunately we have been unsuccessful in our efforts to convince the city to turn around the decision to de-fund Critical Path. With major city budget shortfalls coming out in the Philadelphia news, we had many sympathetic ears, but unfortunately no commitments. We would like to thank Don Schwarz, the Deputy Mayor and Health Commissioner, for his support and attempts to help Critical Path.

The good news is that Critical Path is not shutting down completely. However, due to the cut in funding, we will not be able to maintain all of our services.

  • Website and Lists: We will continue to support and host all of the websites and electronic mailing lists that are currently on our servers. This will require us to move our servers to a new facility. We will update the website and list owners of any changes that they may experience well in advance. We appreciate your patience and look forward to continuing to provide this service for you. We anticipate very little interruption to you.
  • Dial Up Internet Access: We are very sad to say that we will no longer be able to maintain dial up Internet access. This service will not be supported by Critical Path after November 10th. We have compiled a list of free and low-cost Internet options. While we cannot recommend a specific company, we want to make you aware of several options.  Click here to find out more. In addition, the AIDS Library’s computer lab is open to the public Monday-Friday 1-5pm and is available to anyone who needs Internet access. The Critical Path and AIDS Library staff can also help you locate a computer lab or resource center in your neighborhood. Click here to find out more.
  • Email: We are currently continuing to maintain all email accounts and we are working on a solution that we hope will allow us to continue to support your email accounts. However, we are unsure at this point in time as to whether we can continue this service in the long term. We will alert all email users and provide plenty of notice should we have to discontinue this service. We ask for your patience regarding email until we are better able to make this decision.

We would like to thank DCAnet, the company that has provided dial up access to our users around the region, who has maintained our servers, and who has helped us with the migration efforts over the past year. They have been exceptional partners who understand the importance of the Critical Path Project and digital inclusion, and have generously agreed to maintain our services for the next few weeks while we transition Critical Path.

Sincerely,

The Critical Path Team
