Mailing List Name:
The mailing list name is usually one word or an acronym, which is representative of the list's subject. Mailing list names are not case sensitive, and can not contain any spaces.
Mailing List Software (choose one):
Listserv 14.5 (recommended) Listproc 6.0c Majordomo
Critical Path offers the three leading mailing list hosting software platforms. Choose to host your list on the one that will best fit your organization's needs.
Short Description of List:
The short description is a brief, one-line statement that identifies the purpose of your list. It must be 60 characters or fewer, including spaces, and may not contain periods or commas. .
Long Description (info file):
The long description gives people the opportunity to know more about your list before they decide to subscribe. If your list is restricted to certain groups or individuals, the long description is a good place to let people know. This may guide them in deciding whether or not they qualify to join your list. The entry for your list might look something like this. The purpose of this list is to provide a forum for discussion about big computers and issues related to their use in both the Mac and PC environments. The list is open to anyone interested in this topic.
List Owner's Email Address:
The owner's email address is the email address of the person who will manage the mailing list. Listproc commands can only be issued from this email address, and no other.
Maintenance Password: (required for Listproc & Majordomo only)
You will use this password every time you perform maintenance on your mailing list. It will be part of many commands, including commands affecting subscriptions (e.g., subscribing a person to your list or removing an unwanted participant from your list) and commands affecting list configuration. Your maintenance password should not be the same as your login password, your name, your username, or a word that is easy to guess. The security of your list depends on the security of this password. If someone should guess your list maintenance password, s/he could change your welcome message or other files to contain inappropriate information; s/he could subscribe people you might not want subscribed; or s/he could unsubscribe people you want subscribed. Your maintenance password must consist of at least five characters and may consist of as many as eight. You may use both alpha and numeric characters; however, please avoid using the quotation mark, apostrophe, and comma (" ' ,). Maintenance passwords are case sensitive.
Normal or Restricted Subscriptions: Normal Restricted
A normal list is open to any subscriber. A restricted list is open only to subscribers who have been approved by the list owner. Restricted lists are more time-consuming to maintain than are normal lists because you must read and approve all messages requesting a subscription to the list. (A list can be both restricted and moderated, in which case the list owner must approve all subscription requests and all contributions.)
Moderated or Unmoderated: Moderated Unmoderated
A moderated list requires that the list owner approve all contributions before they are distributed. Moderated lists are more time-consuming to maintain than are unmoderated lists. If you choose "Moderated," be prepared to spend a good amount of time reading messages and making thoughtful decisions about what is or is not appropriate for posting to the list. (A list can be both moderated and restricted, in which case the list owner must approve all contributions and all subscription requests.)
New Subscriber Initial Welcome Letter:
This is the initial welcome message, which Critical Path's list server will automatically send to all new subscribers. This letter should introduce the list and include information such as who the list owner is, where to send requests, how to get help, how to unsubscribe, and how to change the subscriber's personal password associated with the list. It can be particularly helpful for subscribers who are new to the electronic mailing list concept.
