Return to PFLAG-Talk home page
PflaggerTalk Chums,
Many of you know that I designed a logo which says, "You Always Have a Home in PFLAG."
It was made into t-shirts, bookbags, sweatshirts, enamel pins, and bumperstickers.
Lately, I have been getting a lot of response to my two bumperstickers that I have on either side of my license plate on my car. From repeated "thumbs up" signs when I'm being passed to two lovely lesbians at Ikea who were delighted to see a PFLAG bumpersticker.
But, truly the most touching thing I've experienced was in coming out of Northbrook Court this week [a mall in Northbrook, Illinois. Well, duh.:-)] and waiting by my car was a young African American man. I asked him if I could help him and he said:
You know, it never occurred to me that it might produce that effect but on some level it makes sense. He knew that inside that mall was a person who would embrace him, care for him, yes...put herself in harms way if need be, for him and others like him.
It was inherent in the message of "You Always Have a Home in PFLAG."
So, what I was thinking is this: What if I had, at our Chapter's expense, a large number of bumperstickers made that would be given away free to anyone who wanted them?
I could have 500 made in two colors for a reasonable amount, see what the response is and then make more. I don't know, perhaps it's just a pipedream, but I would like to see it as pervasive as the "I have an honor student in Dumbf**k High" bumpersticker.
The good thing about it, I suppose, is that it's not an in-your-face message. It's a quiet message of support. It shows that the people inside that car, care. Simple as that.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Am I off the mark here? I guess it was the look on that gentleman's face that made me realize how wonderful it would be to have a visible network of support for our beloved gay and lesbian children and friends that was more pointed perhaps than the ubiquitous rainbow flag.
Love and Happy Holidays to One and All,
Nancy Lamkin Olson
P.S. The Time Magazine "Man of the Year" was just announced and it is: Bill Clinton and Ken Starr. Boo.
