November 28 - The Day Of Remembrance
Tuesday, November 28th, is the National Day of Remembrance, the day we pay
tribute to victims of gender based hate crimes. Please come and join us as
we celebrate the lives and mourn the deaths of our deceased friends, family
and loved ones.
The following background material was provided by Gwendolyn Ann Smith,
creator of the "Remembering Our Dead" web site, at www.gender.org/remember/
The Day of Remembrance is held on November 28th, to coincide with the murder
of Rita Hester, a transgender woman killed in Boston, MA, and part of the
original impetus for this project.
A minimum of one individual a month is reported murdered based simply on
anti-transgender hatred. Since the beginning of 2000, we have lost too many transgendered brothers and sisters. These include the deaths of:
- Alina M.
Barrigan (San Jose, California) - January 19, 2000
- Jill Seidel (Honolulu, Hawaii) - February 3, 2000
- Ihok (Lenteng Agung, Jagakarsa, Indonesia) - February 14, 2000
- Vanesa-Lorena Ledesma (Córdoba, Argentina) - February 16, 2000
- Christine Chappel (Lowestoft,
Suffolk, England) - March 2, 2000
- Michelle Lynne O'Hara (New York City, New York) - March 14, 2000
- Stephanie Yazum (Schenectady, New York) - March 23, 2000
- Deja (aka
Dondre) Johnson (Miami, Florida) - April, 2000
