"Get involved, create a better future peacefully, worldwide"

Background

Jaffna, the most northerly city of Sri Lanka, was until 2002 the battleground of a divided nation, and more recently

was affected by the December 26th 2004 tsunami. This Community Center will provide a focal point for this hard hit

community, and will provide much needed services for all of the population regardless of age, gender, race,

religion or politics. We plan to hire local people whenever possible in addition to international volunteers.
The Education Center:
The four story building (similar to the above photo) will be built on a former bomb-site.
There will be seven halls, which will house many vital services:
An educational facility
A free computer school
The center for conflict resolution
A meditation center
An internet café
A communication center
A tutorial institute
An international hostel

How will you be part of this crucial new development?

There are two ways you can help to provide this valuable community resource:

Volunteer

Short-term (2 weeks), medium term and long-term volunteer placements are available from February 26th 2006

to help build the education center. 10 volunteers are needed; both skilled and non-skilled are welcome.

Free board and lodging will be provided.

Donate

Every building comprises many individual bricks, and every donation brings us closer to our completed

education center. Nothing is wasted; no contribution is too small to make a difference.

We welcome donations of building materials at any time, and of furniture when the construction is completed.

Finances

We need to raise (US)$25,000 for the first floor, $15,000 for the second floor, and $10,000 each for the upper two floors.

The Point Pedro Project will require $10,000 for each of the three stories. In recognition of donors' generosity,

the seven halls will be named in memory of donors' loved ones. The public has access to our accounts

with a reasonable notice period. Don't forget that donations can be tax-deductible. You can truly make a difference!

Please help us make this dream a reality!

Proposal for short, medium, and long term work camps

VIS acquired two properties, one in Jaffna and the other in Point Pedro.  We have decided to concentrate first on the property in Jaffna, and will begin work within one year.  We are planning to construct two buildings.

The goal of the project is to provide an educational center that houses a communication center, tutorial institute, youth hostel, visitors quarters, offices, staff quarters, meditation room,  and a free computer school.  We currently do not have any funds earmarked for the project, other than six lakhs of Sri Lankan rupees that were donated by the children of the gentleman who donated the property, which was destroyed during the war.

Donations for the building fund

Both buildings will have seven halls, which we have planned to name in memory of the donors' loved ones.  We are hoping to raise $20,000 US for the first floor,  $15,000 for the second floor, $10,000 each for the remaining two upper floors of the main building, and $10,000 each for the three floors in the second building.

Donations in the form of building materials are welcome, as well as furniture donations when construction is finished. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to our office any time.

Volunteers

We are expecting a team of ten international volunteers, who will be at the site from the beginning to the end of the construction period.  We are also planning to have a staff of international volunteers on-site as far into the future as possible after the project's completion.  We will hire local personnel whenever feasible.

Long Term Projects in USA, Ghana and Sri Lanka.

We are doing two projects at Philadelphia, USA and  will be going on for a few more years as we are renovating the two  buildings to house a school for computer training, internet cafe, office for our organisations, quarters for the volunteers and a  community center. Our long term projects in Sri Lanka  and in Ghana will be starting pretty soon. Details available at present  are above.
